Deepal Automobile Technology Co., Ltd. or Shenlan Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 深蓝汽车; pinyin: Shēnlán Qìchē; lit. 'Deep Blue') is an electric vehicle manufacturing company owned by Changan Automobile.
The company was originally named Chongqing Changan New Energy Automobile Technology founded in 2018 and became an independent brand since 2023.
In April 2008, Changan Automobile and Chongqing Science and Technology Venture Capital Co., Ltd. jointly invested to establish Changan New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd.
On December 8, 2017, the New Energy Division of Changan Automobile was established, consolidating the planning of new energy products, complete vehicle development, powertrain system development, procurement, and sales within the division.[1]
From January 2020 to March 2022, with consolidation of Changan New Energy and the New Energy Division of Changan Automobile, Changan New Energy Automobile Technology was established. After the introduction 12 investors in two separate rounds, causing Changan Automobile's ownership to be temporarily decreased from wholly owned 100% to 40.66%.[2] The company announced first model SL03 (codenamed C385) under the brand Changan Shenlan (Chinese: 长安深蓝; pinyin: Cháng'ān Shēnlán).
At the end of 2022, Changan Automobile announced the acquisition of a 10.34% stake in Changan New Energy Automobile Technology from two shareholders, increasing its ownership stake from 40.66% to 51.00%, thus regaining control of the company.
In 2023, the English name of the Changan Shenlan brand was announced, the Deepal, and the Changan New Energy Automobile Technology was renamed to Deepal Automobile Technology. The Deepal brand was independently operated from Changan Group.[3]
In November 2023, Deepal introduced two models in Thailand, the L07 sedan and the S07 SUV. Both models are imported from China. Changan is building a production base in Thailand, with the first phase production planned in the first quarter of 2025.[4]
The first model of Deepal, the SL03 (codenamed C385), was introduced in 2022. The current Deepal models used Chang'an EPA NEV platform, separated into EPA0, EPA1 and EPA2. Five initial models will be released, 1 based on EPA0 and 4 based on EPA1.[5]
