Leadec (formerly Voith Industrial Services) is a German multinational company specializing in technical services for the automotive and manufacturing industries. Headquartered in Stuttgart, the company employs around 23,000 people worldwide. For over 60 years, Leadec has been providing services for major automotive manufacturers, suppliers and other manufacturing companies along the entire value chain. The service provider is based on site at its customers' plants and factories, but also operates at more than 350 of its own locations in a total of 16 countries. In 2023, the Leadec Group generated a combined turnover of more than 1.24 billion euros.[2]
Leadec operates in Germany, the US, Canada, France, Mexico, Brazil, India, China, the UK, Austria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal and Spain.
Germany is the Company's largest market, accounting for approximately 50% of its revenues. Other key regions include North America with 35%, China and India with 7% each. In addition, Brazil plays a significant role in Leadec's global operations, underscoring its importance in the company's international business strategy.[3]
Leadec has its origins in 1962 with the founding of the boiler cleaning company Reichenberger & Co. for the cleaning of heating and water boilers. In the 1960s, a new service was created: external maintenance of machines and systems. The company was renamed Deutsche Industriewartung GmbH, Reichenberger & Co. and from 1985 operated under the name Deutsche Industriewartung GmbH & Co. KG (DIW).[4] In 1986, Salamander and Voith acquired DIW.[5]
In October 2000 the Group Division Voith Industrial Services was founded.[6] In 2000, Voith Industrial Service acquired a stake in Hörmann Industrietechnik. In 2004, Voith Servicos Industriais do Brasil Ltda. was founded.[7] In 2005, the company acquired Premier Manufacturing Support Services, Inc. to strengthen its international position as a partner to the automotive industry.[8][9] This was followed in 2006 by the acquisition of a majority stake in Hörmann Industrietechnik for complex technical industrial services with a focus on the automotive industry.[10]
In August 2014 Helix Systems Inc. with 260 employees and 30 million dollars in sales became part of Voith Industrial Services.[11][12] In September 2014, Voith Industrial Services sold its subsidiary DIW.[13]
In fall 2016 Voith sold its industrial services division to the private equity firm Triton.[14][15] The latter divided the company into two service companies, Leadec and Veltec.[16] Since then, Leadec has been one of Triton's portfolio companies. Under the new owner, Leadec is an independent service company that is fully geared towards the requirements of the service sector and can operate on a customer-specific basis. Veltec was sold to Plant Systems & Services PSS GmbH in November 2018 and focuses on the process industry.[17]
With the acquisition of Diversified Automation in the USA at the end of 2020[18], Leadec entered a new market: logistics and parcel services. This reduced the company's dependence on the automotive industry from 80% to 70% at the time.[19] The acquisition is considered the largest in the company’s history to date.[20]
Leadec's expansion can be divided into three distinct phases. In the 1990s and 2000s, the company focused on entering new markets in Asia and Latin America, including China and Mexico, laying the foundation for its global presence. In the second phase, Leadec strengthened its market position in China by establishing strategic partnerships and expanding its local operations. Currently in its third phase of expansion, the company is focused on helping Asian manufacturers enter the European and North American markets, with a particular emphasis on electric mobility.[3]
The new Leadec brand was announced on January 23, 2017.[21] The company name is intended to emphasize the company's independence: Leadec is made up of the English words "lead" (lead, leadership) and "tec" (technology).[22]
