The Ghana Education Service (GES) is a government agency under the Ministry of Education responsible for implementing government policies that ensure that Ghanaians of school-going age irrespective of their ethnicity, gender, disability, religious and political dispositions receive quality formal education. The Ghana Education Service is governed by a fifteen-member council called the GES council.[1][2]

The agency was established in 1974 by the National Redemption Council. It partners with organisations and is demarcated into various units to ensure the effective execution of its mandate[1] to the Ghanaian society.

History

[edit]

The Ghana Education Service (GES) was established in 1974 as a part of the Public Service of Ghana by the National Redemption Council under the National Redemption Council Decree (NRCD 247).[3] It was later amended by the NRCD 252, NRCD 357 and the Supreme Military Council Decree (SMCD 63).[3] In the Constitution of the Fourth Republic, the earlier legislations have subsequently been amended by Acts of Parliament; Act 506 (1994) and Act 778 (2008).[1]
