Peter McGinley (born 1973/74)[1] is an Irish Gaelic football coach and former player for the Donegal county team.
P. J. McGowan was the manager to introduce McGinley to the Donegal senior team.[2]
McGinley emerged as a player at the age of 17 when he played for his club in their three matches as they advanced to the 1991 Ulster Senior Club Football Championship final; he had not played during the 1991 Donegal Senior Football Championship which his club had won to qualify for the Ulster Club SFC.[1]
McGinley managed his club to the final of the 2010 Donegal Senior Football Championship but Naomh Conaill defeated them, following a series of injuries in advance that made competing in that game all the more difficult.[3][4] He also served as Jim McGuinness's assistant manager with the under-21 county team that reached the 2010 All-Ireland Under-21 Football Championship final but did not join McGuinness in his later senior role due to work commitments.[5][6]
McGinley coached (at under-18 level) Séamus Coleman, who went on to play for League of Ireland side Sligo Rovers, transferred to English Premier League side Everton and took over as captain of the Republic of Ireland national football team during the UEFA Euro 2016 final tournament in France.[7]
One of the other highlights from 1991 for Jimmy White was the emergence of two young stars of the future who went on to play for Donegal at U-21 and at senior level… Declan Boyle and Peter McGinley broke into the team in 1991. They were only 17 at the time.
…Peter McGinley's injury-ravaged side were well beaten by Naomh Conaill.
Gallagher took the position of assistant manager in January 2011 on the recommendation of the outgoing Peter McGinley, who worked as McGuinness's number two with the Donegal panel that reached the All-Ireland U21 final in 2010.
McGuinness's assistant was Peter McGinley, who also at the time managed Killybegs. Gallagher had helped train the panel at Fintra and the team that was[sic] decline with the area ravaged by emigration and fishing quotas, got another day in the sun. Killybegs, four-time county champions in the 1990s, reached the 2010 Donegal SFC final but went down to Naomh Conaill of Glenties. McGinley, due to work commitments in the insurance sector, was unable to make the step with McGuinness, who was promoted from U21 to senior manager.
His under-18 coach, Peter McGinley, still remembers his deadly effect.
