Stromness Primary School is a primary school in Stromness, Orkney. The school has around 125 students. The school has a small library, a cafeteria, an art room, a music room, and more. The school children are divided into 4 houses, named after islands in Orkney (Fara, Cava, Rysa, and Switha).

History

[edit]

On June 21, 1919, students from both the primary and higher schools were taken to witness the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow.[2]

In 1996, a pupil named Kevin Pepper had to commute to Orkney for school after his last school on Graemsay closed after being opened 120 years ago in 1876. The transport cost was expected to be £54,000.[3]

On January 15, 2013, Stromness Primary School relocated to a new, modern facility on Cairston Road, replacing the original building that had served the community for many years.[4] The new school was officially opened by Anne, Princess Royal on July 4, 2013, underscoring its significance to the local community.[5] A copper sculpture by Anne Bevan and funded by the Orkney Islands Council was installed on the school grounds.[6]

The previous school building was subsequently taken over by Heriot-Watt University, refurbished, and renamed the Robert Rendall Building.[7]

On September 24, 2015, a report by the BBC highlighted that the roof of the new school building required re-slating after approximately 300 roof slates were blown off. However, Orkney Islands Council stated that the building had met UK building standards.[8]

Described as a "quirk of fate" by the Orcadian, the 2024 P1 class intake comprised solely of boys.[9][10]
