I (Gavin, he or they pronouns are fine) am a Glasgow native with South African heritage. My academic and professional background is in particle physics and medical physics, and I have lived and worked for an extended period in Geneva. I am currently a clinical scientist working in medical physics, with a particular focus on radiotherapy physics and informatics related to it.

My interests include most anything scientific (particularly in the physical sciences and computer science), the use and history of systems of measurement (particularly SI), cryptography (particularly cryptocurrency), philosophy (particularly philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, epistemology, politics, and ethics), literature (particularly literary Romanticism and speculative fiction, and some Modernism), counterculture (particularly psychedelia), language (particularly ancient languages, Celtic languages, and conlangs), music (particularly electronic, classical, and jazz), art (particularly ancient, Renaissance, and modern – hold the Baroque and Rococco, the world is chintzy enough), the nature of human sexuality, the cultural history of psychoactive substances, free culture (particularly FOSS), decentralised systems for information exchange and decision making, and video games (of pretty much any type).

My current fascinations include virtualisation, machine learning, the cultural implications of economic automation, and the relationship between natural and formal languages. I am particularly interested in functional programming and improvements to human-computer interfaces. Outside of academic/work stuff, I enjoy winter sports, learning languages, world literature, and advocating for causes I am passionate about, including improving public understanding of mental health and libre software (discovering Linux as a teenager made me fall in love with computing). In WP terms, I would tend to class myself as having inclusionist tendencies.
