Hi! Thanks for revising the hook for Mill Mountain Zoo -- I hadn't had time to check back for a few days and so hadn't noticed Espresso Addict's request for an alternate hook. Since you added the hook that was eventually featured...

Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 18:26, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
I don't think they can/should be considered primary sources. Under WP:PSTS, primary sources "are sources very close to the origin of a particular topic," which these are not. For example, the Book of Tang was written during the Later Jin Dynasty (Five Dynasties), which meant that the events described were already at least 30 years old, and some were over 300 years old, by that point. The New Book of Tang, written during the Song Dynasty, was even more remote from the events. Some of the primary sources that were used to compile these histories are still extant, and some are not, but these histories themselves cannot be considered primary. --Nlu (talk) 06:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, was offline for a while. Looks to have been done by someone else. Espresso Addict (talk) 13:11, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the update on DYK. I didn't realize that the appropriate date was the start of the expansion, not the end. I also didn't realize it had been a DYK before. I just noticed it was the last Kentucky governor article eligible for DYK expansion (by length, anyway), and since I have access to a few good Kentucky governor books, I just went for it. I'll try to be more careful in the future. Certainly didn't intend anything untoward. Acdixon (talk • contribs • count) 13:16, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi, you mentioned on the DYK page that the article does not qualify to be a DYK candidate because it contains a summary of existing articles. I'd like to point out that currently there's only one other article that it is a precis of. How would you suggest that the article be modified so that it qualifies for DYK? --Novelty (talk) 13:42, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I hate to be a bother, and I am not making an issue of this, but I can't understand why you altered the suggested hook for Militia of Jesus Christ. "...that the chief purpose of the military order the Militia of Jesus Christ was to combat heresy?" sounds completely uninteresting to me. There have been many entities devoted to combatting the heresies of some given orthodoxy, why is it notable that the Militia of Jesus Christ had this purpose? I don't think it is. Further, I find "the military order the Militia of" to be a little jarring. Can I ask why it is not interesting that an order of knights wore the garb of an order of friars? Despite this, thankyou for promoting it to the main page. Srnec (talk) 22:43, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Hey Gatoclass. I put a copy of the image at Image:USS Sierra AD-18.jpg and changed the call in the article. All that remains is to put a {{Bad name|Image:USS Sierra AD-19.jpg}}

Thank you for interceding. Obviously we all make mistakes... my real worry was that I couldn't find anyone to admit their error. I'm guessing I have now ... I'm not sure we can ever make sure that everyone knows about these - I'm willing to take the risk, but I do find it surprising that someone picked the image filename out of a pile of imagemap numbers and then deleted the numbers as if they were random math. As I say ... its OK and thank you for helping. When you do apply for adminship do point out that some admins choose for you to speak for them. Its a compliment to your skills. Victuallers (talk) 17:09, 20 April 2008 (UTC). "End of" ... your reputation goes up another notch. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 17:29, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
I saw your comments, and had some discussion with User:Art LaPella about them. The source DOES say that Jesus' walks are seen as the predecessors of the various Easter meanderings. (I'm going to double check exactly what it says, but I've got to get the book back from the library first.) I was kind of taken aback by it at first, but it DOES seem that people have been doing Easter walks for a long time, and in a lot of contexts. We changed a "parade" to a "procession" in one place, and IMHO that improves things quite a bit. I'd be interested in what you think.
BTW, what's the source of your interest in APA's? I have a similar interest in AKA's, because I served on one long ago and recently started a reunion group. Lou Sander (talk) 22:17, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Can I just ask what the hell happened to my DYK nomination? I just thought it would be a good entry to have on the main page, but somehow it never made it there. Lampman Talk to me! 01:39, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
The DYK credit at User talk:Art LaPella#DYK-Smrkovsky should go to User:Aloysius. I have never written my own DYK article or hook, although I have often rewritten unclear hooks, as in this case. Art LaPella (talk) 16:23, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

A score card is a piece of paper where someone (usually an official) keeps track of the score (game) in a game (like a Box score (baseball) in baseball). So in auto racing, they would keep track of how many laps that a driver completed by recording the time that the driver completed a lap. It has been replaced by transponders in everything from international touring series down to some local tracks. Some local tracks still use score cards. Can you think of a better wording for that article so that it's clear to a non-racing fan thoroughout the world? I can't. Royalbroil 15:29, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh my, do we really have to use another U.S. building image for the next DYK? I think we could replace it with one of those Turkish stamp images... --BorgQueen (talk) 04:34, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

This is a hilarious typo. Ottava Rima (talk) 12:35, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I responded here and I can fix the article with the "dissent" against Milton's authorship, and I have six critical works "proving" Milton's authorship along with three modern publications that label it as "Milton's" vs. the one major work that puts it into doubt. Ottava Rima (talk) 12:48, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I have expanded De doctrina Christiana (Milton), see if that solves some of the confusion. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:48, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Because that would be OR. OR is not allowed, and such an action would be synthesis. Notice how all of those sources say "Milton" in the title when refering to De Doctrina. Ottava Rima (talk) 23:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
But the sources don't say "the document says it", the sources say "Milton says __ in the document". There is a difference between the two, and removing Milton from usage in the sources listed is OR synthesis and a negation of NPOV, because all sources must be represented as they are. Hence the direct quote: "Milton may be quite correctly called an Arian if he holds an anti-Trinitarian view of God; and it is in this sense that scholars have been calling Milton an Arian since the publication of the De Doctrina in 1825."[26] It would be silly to start mixing "Milton says" along with "The manuscript says". Ottava Rima (talk) 00:02, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I added two more lines to the article based on the premise of a 240 page work that explores every possible problem with the manuscript and certifies beyond a doubt why most scholars agree that it is Milton's work. I can expand on what this work says with direct quotes if you think that authorship deserves its own section, since a lot of criticism has been put in to explain why Milton is the author (substantially more compared to the material produced to deny his authorship). Ottava Rima (talk) 00:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I could use the term "rediscovered" to make it more appropriate. The work was "lost" for 100 + years. Also, I updated and expanded on the authorship. Ottava Rima (talk) 00:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Actually, the rediscovery is mentioned twice: "De doctrina Christiana (Christian Doctrine) is a Latin manuscript found in 1823 and is commonly attributed to John Milton. " and "The only manuscript of Christian Doctrine was found in London's Old State Paper Office.[4] The work was one of many in a bundle of state papers written by John Milton while he served as Secretary of Foreign Tongues under Oliver Cromwell. The manuscript was provided with an prefatory epistle that explains the background and history to the formation of the work. If it is correct, the manuscript is the same work refered to in Milton's Commonplace Book and to an account by Edward Phillips, Milton's nephew, of a theological "tracate".[4]" This was followed up with "In 1675, Skinner attempted to publish the work in Amsterdam, but it was rejected, and in 1677 he was pressured by the English government to hand over the document where it was then hidden.[6]" If this isn't clear, I added "1823" to the second mention of the discovery. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:05, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
But the publication wasn't the big thing. It was the fact that the work was completely hidden by the government that is at issue. Even if the work wasn't published, the work would still prove that Milton is an Arian, which reidentifies the Christianity in works like Paradise Lost. Regardless, I reworded the DYK statement to say: "that De doctrina Christiana is identified as John Milton's attempt to define his own particular Christian theology and was lost until its rediscovery 148 years after Milton died?" Ottava Rima (talk) 01:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
The "suppression" line could work, but the work was also denied for publication in other countries, and it was more "buried" than suppressed. Hmm. Its a complicated issue to say the least. Ottava Rima (talk) 01:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I added two alternate hooks, based on your suggestion. When I said "complicated" before, I mean the suppression. Thanks for your help. :) Ottava Rima (talk) 01:51, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I enjoyed working with you, and you gave valuable insight to areas that should be expanded immediately. I am sure we will run into each other more often. Congrats on your RFA, it was overdue and DYK sure needs more with your level of participation. Ottava Rima (talk) 03:21, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey there, I was about to update DYK (3 hours overdue!!!!11) and noticed you tagged T:DYK/N with {{inuse}} a few minutes ago. I was wondering if you'd object using the following as the last hook:
The article is in excellent shape, and the hook statement is quite easy to verify. If you don't come back to the page in a while, I'll just go ahead and update—sorry, but 9 hours with the same hooks is just far too long. Best, Fvasconcellos (t·c) 01:38, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I would like to request that you delete my talk page, since it has caused problems because of my edit in the "Pope John Paul" article. It has caused problems, due to other users believing that my edits were "bad faith" when I edited a subsection of the article's "Dalai Lama and the Pope's relationship," while I was perfectly aware my intentions were of good faith. My block was made by admin Kafziel, who believes that my edits were "destructive to the Wikipedian community," and therefore, reverted every single edit I made on the day of my edit for the Pope John Paul article, therefore blocking me for a period of ONE (1) day. I have noted your ‘Reads like an ad’ tag at Woodhouse Grove School and have started work on a cleanup but have started to struggle to make any further alterations without decimating the article. Could I lean on your broader and deeper editing experience for help?
Firstly I wanted to assure you that there are no ulterior motives in the article. I have no connection whatsoever with the school, I just have a general interest in British school institutions and have also edited several other schools with which I have no personal connection eg Skegness Grammar School and King Edward VI Humanities College which I consider to be far inferior to the Woodhouse article.
I was browsing in a local Boston book fair and bought a moth eaten second hand copy of the book “The story of Woodhouse Grove” for 75 pence, looked up the school’s rather sad little stub on wiki and set about expanding it. I am a new wiki editor with only a couple of month’s experience – filling in my retirement time after three strokes – another editor waxed lyrical about my expanded Woodhouse entry and suggested I put it forward for the “Did you know” section.
All of the “reads like an ad” info and comments in the article have come from third party sites unconnected with the school, mostly the Independant Schools Council and OFSTED reports by government officials. There is no personal POV stuff of mine in there.
I assume the section you have most problem with is the “School Today” parts, but it does seem to match similar sections for many British schools in content and coverage. What else needs to be changed and how? 21stCenturyGreenstuff (talk) 11:23, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

I did some investigating and found a consirable spamming campaign done by a ring of accounts all working for the benefit of a ring of companies that look legitimate such as...
hxxp://www.childhealth.co.uk/ hxxp://www.constipationadvice.co.uk/
and about a dozen more, all popping up under the "external links" of every wikipedia page that someone one go to for looking up a remedy. I spent a lot of time, reviewing the edits of one particular user, but found that earlier revisions (like 6 months before) were also doing the same thing, then disappearing.
The conclusion of my digging was that hxxp://www.alchemyinteractive.co.uk/ and hxxp://www.webheads.co.uk/ are just two of a group of 10 or more domains that are involved in account manipulations (create an account, do 4-5 harmless edits to disguise their intentions) then spam a lot of the wikipedia pages, then disappear.
I was very lucky to discover that alchemyinteractive and webheads are related, or else I wouldn't have been able to connect them. I read on another talk page that you handle this kind of stuff, or know who to turn it over to. These two companies have phone numbers and when I googled them, several online websites ("web design and online promotion companies") are all puppet websites but none of them ultimately say who the parent company is that operates them all (and for good reason--it would make it too easy for wikipedia admins to stop them).
So hopefully you know the admin who knows the admin who can put my information to good use and make wikipedia's anti-spam bots and techncicians stronger and more effective. I'd call the company myself and tell them to stop, but I live in the states and a call to London or a black-fax would cost me too much $ and I'm broke.
P.S. Those "legitimate sounding companies" make you register for a "free leaflet by email" and even if someone doesn't give out their email, their cookies are VERY unkosher and they spam you with lots of seemingly good information and they try to emulate webmd.com except not run by doctors, and they are only seeking traffic, and conversion ratios. I only felt like doing this because I came to WP looking for info on an earache, and then remembered seeing similar spam that I faintly remembered from a year ago (and digging discovered different accounts one linking to alchemyinteractive and one linking to webheads, and thanks to google, I tied those companies together, thus leading to the deduction that it would be more effecient to just keep an eye on that unknown parent company of the two, because its impossible to connect all their spamming unless we know every online-promotion-company under the parent company's control). I wish I knew who to directly give this information to, but I'm not as well networked here on WP as you are. Thanks in advance, and hope that the thousands of volunteers can outwit the major spam ringleaders. Sentriclecub (talk) 06:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
You wrote, as a middle aged male, I tend not to have the same testosterone charged reactions that seem to afflict some of the (presumably) younger editors. I mean, I see a fair bit of immaturity here. I doubt your statements would be accepted by the community if you were a woman stating that you wouldn't be "hysterical" or "catty," and it pains me to see that you view maleness and male hormones as an impediment to the progress of the encyclopedia. I would ask that you please cease making sexist claims about males and male hormones, and apparently attempting to play to overall, general anti-male sentiment on Wikipedia, as seen in WP:CSB and elsewhere. This becomes especially important now that you have sysop powers. I hope you will begin to see men and males as the equals of women and females, and not a group to be distanced from. If the suggested DYK meets the requirements, any editor may add the suggestion to the DYK template next update page and then delete the suggestion from the DYK template talk page. In practice, to ensure that all suggestions are given fair consideration, the oldest suggestions listed on the suggestions page are selected first, to ensure that they don't go stale before they are chosen. DYK entries listed on the next update are not final, and may be amended, edited or rejected by any other editor. If they are rejected, they should be returned to the place on the suggestions page where they were originally listed, with their original comments (consultation of the history of the DYK template talk page may be

"In 1938, Hubbard switched genres. With writers such as Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov and A.E. Van Vogt, he ushered in the Golden Age of science fiction. His heroes tended to be supermen who drew on highly developed mental powers to save the world. By the late 1940s, nearly 100 of his novels had been published, including "Final Blackout," an early classic of the field."
Could you please slap the "verified" tag on this DYK hook? You can check all the cites for yourself if you wish, but the article is indeed very highly sourced, with every single sentence cited to WP:RS/WP:V sources. Thanks for taking a look, Cirt (talk) 07:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for the compliment. I think it's a very good article, so kudos for your involvement.
I couldn't help noticing your interests lie with ships and military matters etc, and I don't know where you're from, but I'm intrigued by your interest in a (now little-known) Australian composer.
By the way, can you help with the Talk page problem. Hanson's talk page redirects to Talk:Raymond Hanson (cricketer). The composer Raymond Hanson doesn't seem to have a talk page, curiously. I noticed the problem and I thought moving "Raymond Hanson" to Raymond Hanson (composer) (which was necessary anyway to disambiguate the 2) would fix it, but it didn't fix it. -- JackofOz (talk) 10:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I can't be so appreciative of your comment on Villa Medicea del Trebbio at T:TDYK. For what good it will do, I have swallowed my pride and distaste for citing the bleeding obvious, and added what is surely one of the most pointless and superfluous footnotes in the whole of Wikipedia. -- Theramin (talk) 21:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the thoughts Gatoclass. I must admit I was surprised a double nom with a colourful painting and mention of the Darwin family(*) was not chosen immediately, however its too easy to get paranoic about these things. The only remedy is when I get completely unsolicited support from a solid admin like yourself. Thank you for the best wishes and my best thoughts to you.
An unsolicited factoid *-Erasmus Darwin (the grandad of THE Darwin) had a family motto "all from shells" .... there is solid evidence that Erasmus knew about evolution before Charles gathered the evidence and wrote the book. I went around his house recently as I live in the next county.

Thanks for the compliment on the pic, although I wish it could have been better. It was late that day, it was cloudy and cold and photographing a grayish structure against a cloudy sky gets you a bit of flare from the almost-blown highlight behind it. Taken in sunny weather, midday, with a blue sky behind it it would have been different.
The Irving memorial photo included is actually one someone else took ... mine is the one in the article infobox that shows the whole thing.

Hi - sorry - my mistake completely. "120 days" (4 months :) was a kind of ridiculous typo - I meant "hours," 5 days. Also, I messed up in judging the version - it was clearly a stub prior to June 10, which for a June 15 nom is perfectly OK. I apologize again, Vishnava talk 16:09, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

When you are genuinely concerned about civility, try not to include threats in the post. ("And believe me, next time you make an appearance at AN/I, the result is not likely to be as agreeable for you as it was on the previous occasion.") It dampens the impact of your concern. --Blechnic (talk) 06:14, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Gatoclass, could you go a bit easier on Blechnic? This editor got a very rough start, and it obviously still rankles. From what I have seen, the positive aspects of the contributions far outweigh the negative aspects of the tone and style. We need more people like Blechnic, pointing out things like plagiarism and making sometimes harsh criticisms when they are needed, not less. The civility aspects can be addressed, but it is far harder to educate people who routinely plagiarise. Please see Wikipedia talk:Plagiarism for the current discussions, and for the history, see here and here. For the block log history and discussion, see here. Actually, I added the article back. I did not know that removing it from the nominations page meant that it would be included in the queue for the next update. My appologies. As for the "unattributed statements", everything in that article is attributed to a source. The plagiarism claims are false, but one may question why the same names of organizations Mrs. Jorgensen served on that appear in the main source similarly appear in the Wikipedia article; I cannot make up an organization, thus they will match what those in the source said. Happyme22 (talk) 17:46, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Hello,
I'm sure that you are familiar with the touchy nature of this topic at this time - there is intense debate going on all over the world among scholars, especially with respect to proving the Holodomor as a genocide. The reason I labeled all of the sources as dubious is that they are ALL Russian sources, and not scholarly sources, but appear to be on-line newspapers. In such an article, these sources are indeed dubious, especially because (and I may be assuming a lot here) most regular English WP users would not be able to follow up on them. Thanks, Horlo (talk) 07:12, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
