Question from Foolish Editor (11:05, 5 January 2025)

[edit]

Hello mentor!

Awesome of you to welcome and guide new users to the platform.

I created a talk page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Positive_psychology#Revisit_First_Paragraph

I'm wondering whether I should wait for people to engage with it or proceed with editing. If I make these changes, how should I handle the citations? Is it fine to use the definition with a source citation?

Thanks for your time! --Foolish Editor (talk) 11:05, 5 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Foolish Editor: Well, it's been just 2 days since you posted, so you could wait a little longer to see if there is any response. You can click on "Page views" in the Tools (left column) to see how many watch the page and how many have visited lately. (There are 645 page watchers and 81 visitors have viewed the page in the last 30 days.) Then, there is the principle "Bold-revert-discuss" you might find helpful. Or, in other words, "ask permission", as you have done, or "just do it", and ask forgiveness. There is a helpful article for referencing technique, Help:Referencing_for_beginners, and there is a resource for additional feedback on editing "how to" at the Teahouse. Keep calm and carry on! This keeps happening and nobody is doing anything about it, what is the moderators exactly doing about these wikipedia vandalisms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:85.249.22.63 84.9.236.94 (talk) 15:30, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am not a sysop and so cannot block anyone. A request for protection against editing by all IP and new editors has been filed at Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection. Geoff | Who, me? 15:33, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Milanmicunovic888 (19:25, 21 January 2025)

[edit]

How can I publish an article for others to see? --Milanmicunovic888 (talk) 19:25, 21 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Milanmicunovic888: I assume you refer to your draft created today, Draft:Low Taper Fade Meme. As you can see from the notice at the top of the draft, when you are ready to submit it for review, click on the blue button at the bottom right of the notice, labelled "Submit the draft for review!" When you do that, the notice at the top will change, indicating it is waiting to be reviewed. Be aware that there is a backlog, and it could be up to 3 months before the volunteers who review new draft artucles complete their review. You'll be notified on your user account Talk page when the review is complete. If approved, the article will then be published as part of Wikipedia. Question from Dawsonisgood123 (01:45, 25 January 2025)

[edit]

Hello! I am new and I am working on a draft. I looked at wikipedia's instructions and recommendations and I found that I should ask for review from other editors so before I submit my draft, may you please check it out? (Draft:Matthew Corey) Thank you, have a great evening. --Dawsonisgood123 (talk) 01:45, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Dawsonisgood123: Well, I'm not one of the new article reviewers, but I suspect your draft has issues because it is about an unelected politician. See WP:POLITICIAN. Your article subject would not be notable simply because he ran for office. He must meet the notability requirements outlined in WP:GNG. I don't see significant coverage cited in multiple, independent and reliable sources. Geoff | Who, me? 13:57, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rasamuller (18:11, 2 February 2025)

[edit]

Dear Geoff,

Do you know if -once I've edited & saved a page- it will be immediately visible? Or is there some delay due to fact checking or something else?

Best wishes,

Rasa --Rasamuller (talk) 18:11, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Rasamuller: Dear Rasa, are you asking about the process for creating a new article? You can create a draft article to be reviewed for publication as part of Wikipedia. Start here: Help:Your_first_article Geoff | Who, me? 18:46, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Geoff,
Thanks for your quick reply. I'm talking about a significant amount of edits of an existing page. As well as a translation of the page in another language (which page doesn't exist yet).
Best wishes,
Rasa Rasamuller (talk) 19:56, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hippielongstocking (20:47, 2 February 2025)

[edit]

Hi, I am interested in changing a photo on an article about a living artist. The new photo would be an update because the person has aged. --Hippielongstocking (talk) 20:47, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hippielongstocking: First, please keep in mind that pictures must be available under a free content licence of some kind (see Free content). Free content licences are vastly preferred; non-free pictures without clear reasons for an exception and pictures without source information or clear licence status will be deleted. Please see our image use policy (Wikipedia:Image use policy) for further details. If the image is protected by copyright, please do not upload it — it will just be deleted within a day or two.
If you know that the image already exists under a suitable free licence or if you made the image yourself, then you should upload the file to Wikimedia Commons by visiting this page: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> and clicking on "Upload file" from the left-hand margin. Your "Source" here will be the place (e.g., the http:// website, the book title & page, etc.) where the image exists and is shown to be freely licensed. If the file is entirely your own work and does not contain other copyrighted works within it, you should type Template:Own for the "Source". If the image is not yet under a free licence, but the copyright holder would like to place it under one, he/she may want to use our Interactive Release Generator available here: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_VRT_release_generator>. Once you've successfully uploaded a free image, you can ask here or at the Teahouse how to add it to the article to replace the existing image. Geoff | Who, me? 22:18, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I own the photo. I am a publicist for the celebrity in question. Hippielongstocking (talk) 22:38, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as I wrote, you can use the Template:Own if you took the photo yourself when you upload the image to Commons. If someone else took the picture, you'd need that person to release the rights using the VRT release generator I wrote about earlier. But your position as the publicist for the person raises another issue on Wikipedia: any editing on their behalf would be paid editing, which is required by the Terms of Use to be disclosed. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. How to disclose is in this section: Wikipedia:Paid-contribution_disclosure#How to disclose, which indicates how to put a disclosure template on your user page. You can upload the image on Commons and release it under a free use (CC-BY) or other licence. To add it to the article about your client, you'll want to post a note on the article's Talk page, disclosing your conflict of interest as a paid editor, and ask that a volunteer replace the existing image with the new own you've just uploaded. There is an edit tool you can use for this: Wikipedia:Edit_Request_Wizard. Select the first button (as a paid editor) and follow the instructions. You'll want to point the volunteers to the filename of the image on Commons. Geoff | Who, me? 23:11, 2 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aryweb (07:14, 3 February 2025)

[edit]

"Hi, I'm new to Wikipedia and have submitted company pages for review. Could you please assist me with the process of getting them published?"

Let me know if you'd like any further adjustments! --Aryweb (talk) 07:14, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your username was changed to WikiMaven. Referring to your draft, Draft:Aryson Technologies Pvt. Ltd. As can be seen in the review notice at the top, it has been resubmitted for review, which is pending and may take 2 or more months to complete. Meanwhile, it appears likely to be rejected as it lacks references to reliable sources and appears to be primarily designed to promote your employer. I suggest you refer to the article on what Wikipedia is not, at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion. And also, for further advice on the draft's content, please read these articles: WP:V, WP:RS and Help:Referencing for beginners, and then add appropriate references for the statements in the article. You can keep working on the draft while waiting for the review. Geoff | Who, me? 14:00, 3 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
