Population Matters

Hi,

I'm hoping to get some advice on names to use in reference to an article that I would like to develop in French and other languages. The English version of the article is w:en:Population Matters. Other versions include: w:ar:المسائل_السكانية and w:ru:Движение за оптимальную численность населения

I have a couple of problems with names.

There are advantages in translating the name - studies have shown that a major factor behind increase in population is a low standard of education and am supposing that less well educated people, from any language base, may be less likely to open articles with titles that aren't in their first language.

(sry odd if this has alot of cut and paste text)

The first problem is that this English title has multiple meanings but I still hope to present something meaningful. The second problem is that the previous name of the organisation used a term that has charitable meanings in English which may be lost in translation.

I was hoping to say something along the lines of:
"Population Importance" (Eng.Population Matters; "which also translates as: Population Topics"), "and which was formerly known as the Optimum Population Trust (Eng. the Optimum Population Trust, OPT)...

In English people talk of an important thing by stating that "it matters" (google) and they can also refer to various topics as "subject matters" (google). I guess that the main translated title of of the organisation could refer to either definition of "matters".

In the UK people are familiar with the idea of the w:en:Charitable trust. A similar concept of the legal framework is used in many countries w:en:Trust law but I was unsure whether the meanings of translations of "Trust" would carry anything approaching the charitable meaning of the English "trust". I your views on whether this word should be translated or not would be appreciated.

I don't actually represent the organization but share similar interests. Your advice on names would be really appreciated as, in the first case, this is what would come up in listings.

Redirect pages can be set up from a "Population Matters" page in any language to the actual title of the article. thanks Gregkaye (talk) 12:47, 13 July 2014 (UTC) w:en:User_talk:Gregkaye

New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon

Hi Oddbodz, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members). It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting http://tools.wmflabs.org/huggle/files/huggle3.1.0beta.exe and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle connect!

Major changes:

In case you found a bug, please report it to bugzilla: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?product=Huggle&list_id=147663 thank you! Petrb (talk) 10:19, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Labelling non-vandalism edits as vandalism

[1] and [2] were not vandalism, but mis-guided good faith edits. I suggest you apologize to the IP, as you've driven away a potentially useful contributor. Next time, use a descriptive edit summary for your reverts and do not use a template warning if there isn't one that is appropriate. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 13:25, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Labelling non-vandalism edits as vandalism

Hey what the hell? i am editing about the penis structures around stockholm, and you guys keep removing them? have u ever been to stockholm, its actually usefull and fun information! so let it stay there, i thought this website was used for informing people about a specific subject, per say, the 16 penis shaped structures in stockholm is very relevant to stockholms arcitecture?! dont u think? its modern art. so — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.252.164.6 (talk)

They are not called "Penis structures", so enough of that nonsense. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 13:38, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Yes everyone here calls them "Penis byggnaderna", so i translated them to "penis structures" that is the correct translation.. or would you prefer if i described them as " falic shaped objects of art"... -.- — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.252.164.6 (talk)

No, File:Stockholm-Storkyrkan_01.jpg says this "Penis" structure is called the "Storkyrkan". You have no citations whatsoever to back your point up and, judging by this earlier edit, your edits only appear to be disruptive. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 13:45, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

uhm.. well do u know what "storkyrkan" means..? i guess not, since "storkyrkan" is " Big Church" and i hope that u know that the falic shaped object of art in the picture is not a church.. the church is the building saround it to the right... i just used the picture since i did not have my own picture and i happen to know that its located there.. since i live there.. 80.252.164.6 (talk) 13:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Okay, well if you do live there, then your description is the perfect example of original research, which Wikipedia prohibits. So do provide a source. Also make sure you write in a neutral point of view, and do not make it sound like a tour (i.e. No "So here to the right, there is a marble structure that is absolutely marvelous!"). On Wikipedia, we state the facts and just the facts. Speak the facts, not the opinions, and not with an excited-omg-this-is-so-amazing tone. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 13:55, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
I live there too, and I've blocked the IP for 48 hours for vandalism at Stockholm and for the childish trolling on this page. See also [3]; about Venice, Los Angeles, not Stockholm. Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day. Bishonen | talk 16:31, 13 August 2014 (UTC).

WikiProject Good articles Future GAN Backlog Drive

Hello everyone! Hope you've all been having a great summer!

TheQ Editor recently proposed the idea of having another Backlog Drive in either September/October or November/December of this year. For those of you who have participated in the past two drives you know I was the one who organized them, however, come September, this will be my most important year in school so I will not be able to coordinate this drive (if it happens). TheQ Editor has volunteered to be a coordinator for the drive. If any of you would like to co-coordinator, please notify TheQ Editor on his talk page.

If you would be interested in participating in a Backlog Drive sometime before the end of this year, please notify TheQ Editor. Also, make sure to specify what month(s) work best for you.

At the time this message was sent out, the backlog was at 520 nominations. Since May, the backlog has been steadily increasing and we are currently near an all time high. Even though the backlog will not disappear over one drive, this drive can lead to several others which will (hopefully) lead to the day where there is no longer a backlog.

As always, the more participants, the better, and everyone is encouraged to participate!

GA Cup

Hello everyone! We hope you have all been having a great summer!

As we all know, the recent GAN Backlog Drives have not had any big impact on the backlog. Because of that, me (Dom497), Figureskatingfan, and TheQ Editor have worked on an idea that could possibly finally put a dent into the massive backlog. Now, I will admit, the idea isn't entirely ours as we have took the general idea of the WikiCup and brought it over to WikiProject Good Articles. But anyways, here's what we have in mind:

For all of you that do not know what the WikiCup is, it is an annual competition between several editors to see who can get the most Good Articles, Featured Article's, Did You Know's, etc. Based of this, we propose to you the GA Cup. This competition will only focus on reviewing Good articles.

For more info on the proposal, click here. As a FYI, the proposal page is not what the final product will look like (if you do go ahead with this idea). It will look very similar to WikiCup's page(s).

The discussion for the proposal will take place here. Please let us know if you are interested, have any concerns, things to consider, etc.

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup

WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers.

Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition.

Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now!

If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges.

Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan.

The 17 word stub that was (in my humble opinion) sent prematurely to AFD, is now a 626 word C-Class article that informs our readers and serves the project... a relatively easy 36x expansion. I would ask that you consider a withdrawal so we can close this and move on. Schmidt, Michael Q. 09:44, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Huggle message

Hey Oddbodz! You are receiving this message because you are subscribed at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members#Beta_testers

I have recently launched a new downloads for beta testers that contains nightly builds of huggle, eg. versions that are built every day from our master branch and contains latest huggle. These builds are currently provided only for Windows and Ubuntu. You can find them here: http://huggle.wmflabs.org/builds/

Please keep in mind that these don't have any automatic updates and if you download and start using nightly build, you will need to update it yourself! So don't get yourself to running old version, it's possible to install both stable and nightly huggle, which is what I suggest.

Keep the bug reports coming to phabricator: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/create/?projects=Huggle Many thanks! Petrb (talk) 10:06, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

English-French translation request: File:Air Canada Flight 797 seat injury chart.svg

Hi! Are you interested in stating the French equivalents of all of the English text in File:Air Canada Flight 797 seat injury chart.svg ? I would like for somebody to make a French version of this image. He/she needs to know what to say in French.

Thanks! WhisperToMe (talk) 16:53, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi WhisperToMe, sorry just got this. The translation is within my capabilities so I would be able to do it but I'm really quite busy for the next week or so. If you can give me a couple of week I should be able to have it done for you (and if I don't, drop me a message to remind me as with so much on in real life at the moment, it may well slip my mind!) Oddbodz - (Talk) (Contribs) 23:40, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply! I'll be happy to wait a few weeks. I'll give a reminder maybe at the two week mark if that's alright :) WhisperToMe (talk) 00:51, 22 June 2015 (UTC)
