Overview

The project coordinators will be generally responsible for maintaining the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. They will be the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and will be responsible for ensuring that the project as a whole is properly informed of them.

To provide some examples of coordinator duties: the coordinators will manage the proposal and creation of new task forces; ensure that project announcement and task lists are kept up-to-date; initiate drafting of guidelines needed by the project; organize the category system; oversee the recruitment of new members, including the use of project notices and other advertising methods; create and maintain collaborative projects if any; maintain the project page and the various guidelines in it in a clean and easy-to-use state; monitor technical policies and ensure that project templates satisfy them, and assist in organizing and promoting any Backlog Elimination Drives.

They are also expected to generally assist project members with any questions or concerns.

The coordinator positions will not entail any executive power.

Positions

  • Lead Coordinator (one open position): will have overall responsibility for procedural and administrative matters within the project.
  • Assistant Coordinator (three open positions): will assist the Lead Coordinator by focusing on specific areas within the project that require special attention. These areas will be selected based on need and interest among the coordinators.

Election Process

  • The election process will run for two weeks, starting on December 1, 2010 and ending at 23:59 (UTC) on December 14, 2010.
  • Any member of the project may nominate themselves for either position by creating a new section under "Nominations" below and copying the sample form below. Nominees only interested in one position should indicate this when adding their names. Candidates need not make extensive statements if they do not wish to do so.
  • The elections will be conducted using simple approval voting. Any member of the project may support a nominee for either position. If the nominee is running for both positions and you wish to support them for only one, please make a note to that effect as part of your vote.
  • Both project members and interested outside parties are encouraged to ask questions of the nominees or make general comments.

I have been copyediting Wikipedia for just under five years. Early this year, I discovered the GOCE, and found it without any real leadership, and a Requests page with well over 60 requests which were unfulfilled. I decided to clean up the main page, and attempted to work on the requests backlog. Guild recruitment was at the top of my mind. If we were going to get any work done, we would need more members, and these members need to be active. I created the {{User Copy Edit}} template, and a new category for members using the tag to appear on. I also developed the "Top 10 reasons to join the Guild of Copy Editors" on the GOCE home page. In April 2010, I teamed up with ɳorɑfʈ to organize the very first GOCE backlog elimination drive, recruiting Diannaa as a coordinator along the way. I have been a coordinator of every drive since, and I also do the graphs that you see. I designed a new copyeditor's barnstar as well as the Guild's Gold Star Award. With the success of the drives, I redesigned the Requests page to make it easier to use and more pleasing to the eye. Recently, I also introduced tabs to make navigation easier, and compiled the FAQ page. Finally, I proposed to Diannaa that we should really have proper coordinators for the Guild, to further build on what has been achieved in 2010. And here we are! If I am elected, I hope to continue contributing to the Guild (my usual home in Wikipedia). Thanks!

1. Do you have any ideas for further improvements to the Guild, such as ideas for projects, or ways we could attract new members? --Diannaa (Talk) 22:49, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have been contemplating some sort of mentoring program. As a Guild, we should work to support those who are interested in the craft of copyediting. This might also be useful in helping to keep the interest of experienced editors who are too busy to do full copyedits, but would not mind helping groom new copyeditors to do the work. I would also like to see the Guild setup a step-by-step guide on how to copyedit. Recruitment and retention is of great importance to the Guild. I have recently posted on the Reward board our latest drive, in the hope that it will attract new members to the Guild, and participants to our drives. I would also like to see better collaboration with other active WikiProjects for recruitment purposes. That was a draft that I put up for discussion and consensus before publication on the Guild's home page. My thinking at the time is related to my own experience. I had been editing Wikipedia for a time, but was not doing full copyedits until I found the Guild. After joining, I found that one additional benefit was that one's edit count did indeed go up naturally, due to the amount of edits required to copyedit an article properly. As such, I thought that it may be of interest to some editors who were trying to improve their experience and edit count at the same time. I was trying to come up with 10 good selling points for editors to join the Guild. Not all will appeal to everyone, but this particular point may appeal to some. My thinking has not really changed. I believe that it is not inherently a good thing, but at the same time, it is not necessarily a bad thing either. At the end of the day, edit counts, where it really counts (such as copyediting), do help make Wikipedia (the ultimate winner) better. – SMasters (talk) 02:57, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
3. In light of question #2, what was the purpose of the AWB run you made today that increased your edit count to 32,659 and your mainspace edits to 28,037 (86.11% of overall edit count)? Here is a portion of that run. Lunalet (talk) 01:36, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even though I have been approved to use AWB for a while now, I only recently discovered how to use it properly. Up to two weeks ago, I had a respectable solid edit count with nothing from AWB (from a period spanning just under five years). Since discovering the powerful features in AWB, I have been focusing on two main areas: Category:Living people (which I completed a few days ago), and now, Category:Dead people (I am up to "T"). I am mainly using AWB to make general fixes, fixing ref tags, as well as adding missing personaldata templates as per Wikipedia:Persondata, which states: "Persondata is a special set of metadata that can and should be added to biographical articles only". Next, I will help WikiProject Wikify's December Drive, to remove the wikify tag on pages where it is no longer appropriate. The reason for my edit runs is to help improve Wikipedia with small tedious fixes that take a long time to complete manually. I have been editing Wikipedia for just under five years, and upping my edit count has obviously not been of any great concern. AWB is a great tool, but one of the "side effects" of using it is a rapid increase in edit counts. I hope this addresses your concerns. – SMasters (talk) 02:57, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
4. On December 1, you notified 495 GOCE members about this election (link). While it can be argued that your neutral notification is justified because these people have committed to serving this project, I am extremely appalled by your reprehensible behavior in your subsequent messages to 19 editors (link). To one editor, you wrote:

As an editor who has used the services of the Guild of Copy Editors, I thought you might be interested in knowing that the Guild is currently holding elections for its coordinators. From a cursory glance at your interactions with editors like Jmorrison230582, it appears that you are the one who provided the GOCE services to them. Do you think this canvassing is acceptable behavior? Do you think it will unduly affect the outcome of the election, giving you a highly unfair advantage over the other candidates? I note that Diannaa has not engaged in any disruptive, unethical, immoral canvassing. Right now, Diannaa has 29 supports and you have 34. If you had not canvassed, Diannaa would be the frontrunner—the Lead Coordinator. Because of your canvassing, Diannaa must now settle for the inferior position of Assistant Coordinator. After reviewing the circumstances here, how can you face up to your lack of integrity? I am well aware of, and fully understand, the policies regarding canvassing. I notified 495 GOCE members by sending out a notice because it was my job to do so. The notice was crafted and discussed on Diannaa's talk page, and due to our mailing list issues, everyone involved with that discussion was well aware that I would be sending out the message. The page on canvassing states: "In general, it is perfectly acceptable to notify other editors of ongoing discussions, provided that it is done with the intent to improve the quality of the discussion by broadening participation to more fully achieve consensus." I do not believe I have broken any rules. My short notice to users of the Guild's services is to alert them of the ongoing elections. I did not ask any of them to vote for me. I have no objections if other candidates do the same, provided that the messages are limited, neutral, nonpartisan and open as per the rules regarding canvassing. I would not view this as disruptive, unethical or immoral. This election goes for two weeks, and we are not even halfway through. Many people have still not voted. It would be way too early to say who would become the lead at this stage. I'm sorry to say, but I do find your view that non-lead coordinators are "inferior", quite offensive. Are you aware that all of the candidates in this election have worked together in the past to make this Guild a better place? 5. What is your reaction to a comment by Malleus Fatuorum that said "I wish you luck with your drive, but it's not for me. It may well be "elitist", but I'm only really interested in helping along those articles headed for FA/GA, where it's not just the grammar and spelling that's important, but the aricle's structure, accessibility, comprehensibility, referencing, image licencing " (link or full discussion)? Everyone here is a volunteer. We can't force anyone to do anything they don't want to. If someone does not want to participate in a drive, then it is their choice. However, there is a place for someone like Malleus Fatuorum in the Guild. We have requests for help for articles that are going for FA/GA all the time. I would encourage editors like Malleus Fatuorum to see if there are any articles in our requests section that they can help with. The fine line here is that YOU helped them copyedit an article and, hoping that they recalled your assistance, asked them to vote in the election. You were clearly seeking votes. Since you maintain that you did not canvass and that "I have no objections if other candidates do the same, provided that the messages are limited, neutral, nonpartisan and open as per the rules regarding canvassing", please compile a list of editors for whom Diannaa and the rest of the candidates have copyedited an article. Either you notify them yourself of this election neutrally, or give me the list and I will do it. Unlike you, I have a conscience and integrity that prompts me to do the right thing in all fairness. What you are asking me to do is simply impossible. If you know anything about about us, you will know that we copyedit hundreds of articles, and deal with many editors. How will I know which editor each candidate has dealt with specifically for copyediting? You are really brewing a storm in a teacup. Please assume good faith. I posted notes to just a handful of editors, which is allowed. I have copyedited hundreds of articles, If I really wanted to canvass, I would be writing to hundreds of editors, not just a handful. You are now asking me to mass post, which is not allowed under the rules for canvassing. Of course I will be writing to people I do know. If not, I would be spamming. As I said, I don't see anything wrong with other candidates posting out notices within what is allowed under the canvassing rules. It is allowed provided it is not a mass posting. You talk about integrity, but you claim that you are unable to remember your old username and are being accused of all kinds of violations. 7. You ought to be reminded that your tu quoque arguments do not help your case at all; in fact, they are digging you a deeper hole. You disruptively canvassed 19 users. You are ahead of Diannaa by a measly few votes. If she were to stoop to such dishonest and unscrupulous behavior, she would be far ahead of you. She does not need to canvass to attain an appreciable number of supports. You, though, would have close to zilch supporters if you had not engaged in such trickery. You should be ashamed of yourself. Please look up the tu quoque fallacy before accusing people of doing it. tu quoque is the attempt to justify an action by saying "Well, so-and-so did it too!" Nowhere has SMasters claimed that Diannaa or anybody else posted to other users about this election. His request of "What is your agenda here?" is a very good one. Why do you care so much about the Guild of Copy Editors? Maybe a CheckUser should have a look at your account since it seems to be being used for disruptive editing. Have you ever read WP:CIVIL? And what difference does it make if English is or is not my first language? Or are you just angry that somebody called you out on your misapplication of tu quoque? I am seriously considering an SPI on you, but I can see from your userpage that User:Baseball Bugs already tried to get one and it was declined. For the record, I wrote a note to 18 users (not 19) from the requests page of the Guild, in good faith, to let them know that we are having elections here, and that they may be interested in having a say. My note to Papa Lima Whiskey has nothing to do with these elections. You say that I would have "close to zilch supporters", but if you study the voting, before any of the 18 had responded, I already had 20 votes. And I have had other votes since who are not from the notes. Of the 18, more than half did not vote at all, and several voted for Diannaa. As you are not a member of our Guild, nor did you participate in any of our drives, I am not sure if you are aware of our history. Once again, you are brewing a storm in a teacup. You have been accused of being a troll on your own talk page. Normally, I would not feed the trolls, but I have to respond here as any silence could be incorrectly construed. There is a nominal difference between 18 and 19, but thank you for your correction. It shows that though you have engaged in dishonest behavior, it was not as dishonest as I previously thought. The really interesting thing about all this is not that your success at spattering my reputation has so far formed an insuperable obstacle to my ability to take up the all-encompassing challenge of freedom, justice, equality, and the pursuit of editing in collegiality with full dignity. I sent messages to people who had articles copyedited by Diannaa, exactly of the form you sent. This is called fairness, honesty. I am giving a fair chance to those who did not abusively canvass. What bothers me are disruptive editors who have nothing better to do than to hound good faith competent editors trying to improve the encyclopedia in friendly collaboration with others who are here in good faith to help out. I don't know how you live with yourself knowing you are an abusive and unjust bloke who has shown no respect for his fellow candidates—no fairness or decency. 8. Diannaa and the other candidates in this election have supported those who they believe are qualified for the roles of Lead Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator. They did so despite knowing that each of their supports lowered their own chance of being elected. Hi, I am Diannaa, and I have been editing Wikipedia since October of 2009. I have copy edited literally thousands of articles from the backlog, and have been an active participant in the organisation of the backlog elimination drives. Activities include maintenance of the drive pages, daily updates of the figures, closing off the drives in July and September, sending out barnstars, and preparing newsletters. I have done copy edits of many articles from our requests page, and recently designed and implemented our new archive for that page. I was recently appointed as an administrator and am also a member of the the WP:MILHIST wikiproject.

    My involvement with the MilHist group has involved copy editing, so there's lots of overlap. I have been selecting admin tasks from the dashboard and I continue to hunt vandals with Huggle for a while each day.     There are really two different types of copy editing that I do. When we are running a backlog elimination drive, I focus almost exclusively on articles from the tagged articles. I will select from the oldest ones, or I will focus on the shorter ones. Many of them are biographies, and many of them are about villages in India. So what I do is add an info box of there is not one present, and there is enough info in the article to justify its addition. For articles about villages I will see if I can get coordinates, of they are not already present in the article. For ones about people, I will see if we have a picture on the Commons. Another thing I look for is cut-and-paste copyright violations. If the text suddenly changes in quality, that's a giveaway. It's harder to find the source website after time has passed, as by then there are many mirror sites that also contain the text, but it usually can be located. So any copyright stuff is removed. Typically the articles are unsourced, there are no sources available, some dude in India writes an article about his village, and since all villages are notable we have to keep the article. So I do my best to patch them up and have them meet Wikipedia guidelines.
    The second kind of copy edit that I do is an article for a GA or FA review. The very first thing I do on these is read through the reviewer's comments and try to get a sense of what has happened so far and what further edits the reviewer is looking for. The article might be in pretty good shape, depending on who the author is. Typically the lead is in the best shape and the further down you go the more polishing the text needs. So I try to simplify the language, cut out extra words, re-work awkward sections, simplify tenses to make the language more direct, move around the pics to improve the layout, add alt-text to any pics that do not have it, improve the citations by adding missing information that can be gleaned from Worldcat, put the references in order, check for dead links, check for dabs. I will run the dash script and see if it picks up any en-dash or em-dash booboos. All articles but the military ones especially need to be checked for compliance with either American or British spelling conventions. And I will get out my Chicago and my other copy editing textbook and make sure I really know where my commas are supposed to go.     I would've normally been concerned and investigated, but upon reading Lunalet's rather patronizing remark, "Take a good long look in the mirror, and think about what type of person you want to be in life" I would rather disregard his comments altogether, seeing as it would make no difference what Smasters had done, the opposition is not related to the election but is clearly personal in tone. I have been a member of the Guild of Copy Editors since April 2010. I have participated in every backlog elimination drive since they started, including the May drive, the July drive, the September drive, and the November drive. I was originally supposed to be a co-coordinator for the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, but I retired for a short time and resigned. I co-coordinated the November 2010 backlog elimination drive. I have helped make some of the more important decisions concerning the drives, including the rollover idea introduced in the September drive. I help develop the Guild's newsletters, and even have a subpage dedicated to developing the newsletters. In addition, I also send in requests to MessageDeliveryBot to deliver our newsletters, and when the bot is down, Diannaa and I send the newsletters manually. Basically, I do a lot of the tedious work of the Guild. If elected as a coordinator, I will continue assisting the Guild as it continues to expand.

    I respect Malleus as an editor, and I also respect his opinions. Being a member of the Guild is volunteer work; we can't, nor will we ever, force it onto anybody. In regards to what I do when I copy edit, I fix a lot of grammar mistakes when I copy edit. I also fix and add conversion templates, infoboxes, categories, and wikilinks where appropriate.     Generally I found that the copyedit was too shallow. All I did at the time was fix a few extremely obvious cases of typos and grammar, but not really anything else. Off the top of my head I see missing words not added, redundant words not removed, bad wording not fixed, wrong tenses not fixed and a typo not fixed.     I don't find it "elitist" as everyone has their own interests and what they want to do. If he wants to check for everything then go for it. Generally I try to stay away from any kind of coding since I'm awful with it. (I can't even get an archiving bot to work!) Working with references is dreadful to me since there's just so many characters the only error I can notice is if I forget the closing />. I tend to stay away from structure since either the article is too small to need any reorganizing or the article has been maintained by an editor who may prefer their own way. I find comprehensibility the same as improving wording and grammar which I try to do and stay away from accessibility since it involves moving and reorganizing which like structure is either not necessary or may change how an editor prefers it. I joined the GOCE during their August drive, (that makes me a newbie) but I have gotten acquainted with the overall running of the project. I'd say the GOCE is going pretty well, is very active, perhaps only surpassed by a small number of scattered projects. Coords would help to grease the bearings and post announcements. I would be happy to help with these tasks. I am also approved with MessageDeliveryBot, so I do not have to wait for verification of my deliveries before they are sent.

That is hard to answer, since I haven't written a FA yet. I usually tweak some of those things only when the articles are small, because when they are larger, it is harder to get them into good shape, and others have already done it. I never tweak image licensing, except for my own articles. Does that answer your question? To MF, sometimes Wikipedians have their own specialties, and I won't barge in. Hello! I've been a member of the GOCE since I joined wikipeadia about a year and a half ago, although I have only become an active member since the the September 2010 drive. I am an active member of many other WikiProjects, most notably, WikiProject Good articles, WikiProject Cats, and WikiProject Russia. I also frequently patrol the new pages and IP contributions. I have ideas about how to recruit new members, perhaps first by targeting active members of other WikiProjects. I would like to create a project invitation template (similar to {{WPCannabisInvite}}) and also start a welcoming committee as a way of retaining interested members. While I do not yet feel that I have the seniority to be a lead coordinator, I would enjoy being an assistant coordinator to contribute more fully to this project.   1. What is your reaction to a comment by Malleus Fatuorum that said "I wish you luck with your drive, but it's not for me. It may well be "elitist", but I'm only really interested in helping along those articles headed for FA/GA, where it's not just the grammar and spelling that's important, but the aricle's structure, accessibility, comprehensibility, referencing, image licencing " (link or full discussion)? My reaction to Malleus Fatuorum's comments is that everyone has their own motives and opinions; so long as their edits are doing something to improve the content of Wikipedia, I have no problems with their motives. I believe everyone who is willing should be able to contribute to Wikipedia with whatever range of abilities they possess. As for my own style of editing, I always aim to do as much as I can to improve an article, which includes going beyond grammar to improve the article's structure, the accessibility of language to the general audience, the appropriateness of the images, the formatting and appropriateness of the references, and the comprehensibility of the articles when I am able. Admittedly, I may not be able to contribute much to comprehensibility of an article when I am not familiar with the topic; however, I usually add "expert needed" or other tags whenever there are problems with an article that I can not resolve. --Tea with toast (talk) 18:57, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
