The reason I came here was because I have a question. Would it be constructive to put a little blurb in the article for each station that supports ITunes tagging so that users like myself won't have to search the dial trying to figure out why I can't tag songs off of the radio? This is what the example for KNBQ would look like, KNBQ is one of only a handfull of radio stations in the US to support RDS technology, which allows users of IPods to tag songs directly from the radio. It is the only station in the Seattle market to do so. Also, I think some of the years in radio should be improved. The last time I looked at 1999 in radio there were only a few events. Also, I think the lists of radio stations established in a particular year should be updated. Hello, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (radio series) is one of the few radio Featured Articles, and I would quite like it to be the featured article on 11th May. However, because it was promoted in 2006, it needs a bit of work doing before then. I'm currently working on improving it, but any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks! Hello there. I was just looking at List of In Our Time programmes. The article could be edited by some more au fait with tabulation on Wikipedia than me. While I am here, I also mentioned on the article's talk page that rather than saying "Next programme" we should specify dates on which the next programme will be broadcast - any feedback to that suggestion is welcome. Irish pirate radio has no source or citations. It has mostly been edited by anonIPs but really needs an expert to review and add at least a few references, assuming one can find some books or other available sources. Perhaps Irish media: a critical history since 1922 by John Horgan will be of help if someone can access a copy. ww2censor (talk) 17:54, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

FM is currently a redirect to frequency modulation. That said, an non-exhaustive survey suggests that majority of incoming links are really referring to FM broadcasting or another page or context related to FM radio and not to the page that describes the physics of analog frequency modulation.

User:Georgia guy and I have been having a conversation over at Talk:FM about where the FM redirect should point.

Hello I just took a bunch of pictures of all 3 Voice of America broadcast sites near Greenville NC, enumerated at International Broadcasting Bureau Greenville Transmitting Station

However the pictures I took directly contradict the text on that page, specifically concerning which site is named after Edward R Murrow (article says Site C, but I have pictures of Site B with that title on the side of a building), and also site A looks active (but the article says it isn't), sooooo if there are any VOA nerds out there I would appreciate some help in the cleanup process- I will upload the images anyways but sooner or later this will need to get sorted out. 64.134.242.7 (talk) 05:18, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

This event, which is organized by volunteers from the WikiWomen's Collaborative, supports improving coverage about women's history during the month of March. KTTR AM and FM pages have been nominated for deletion. KTTR has been on the air since the 1940s and I think it should be in Wikipedia. It was cited for copy-write violation but I have heavily edited to ensure it is not in violation. Please help me by reviewing this entry and make changes to anything you think is violation of copy-write. Any help improving these pages would also be very helpful.

I haven't logged in here in a while, but could someone please help me clean up the KYXE article? I've already cleaned up the problem with external links, but cannot get the table written correctly.

I'm just passing through, but I was trying to put some cats on the newly-created Category:Television programmes which were adapted for radio and noticed what a mess the radio show hierarchy is, with the old problem of WP:ENGVAR raising its ugly head. For instance, Category:Radio programmes based on novels is in Category:Radio programs based on works which is clearly a nonsense. The TV people achieve ENGVAR neutrality by having their categories based on Category:Television programming, so Category:Radio programming could work, but Category:Radio shows might be more natural? For consistency Category:Television programmes which were adapted for radio might be renamed to something like Category:Radio shows originating on television but I suspect in practice the radio show will mostly be a footnote on the main TV show article, so the current wording will be more accurate in most cases. Anyway, I just thought I'd point it out, I'll leave it to the radio regulars to work out how you do it.... Le Deluge (talk) 13:56, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Category:Sirius Satellite Radio channels and Category:XM Satellite Radio channels were recently nominated for deletion here and kept. It was suggested during the discussion that the scope of the categories should be narrowed to include only channels that are exclusive to Sirius/XM. Hey, I recently moved an article into a user's mainspace at User:Trentfinlay/Live Wire Radio as it was up for speedy and I didn't want it to be immediately nominated for AfD once I declined it. Live Wire Radio looks to be potentially notable upon first glance, so I thought I'd ask for some assistance with the user and the article. He seems really eager to work on the article, but is just green. I thought it'd be helpful if I got someone specifically interested in radio articles to really help him out in editing the article and looking for sources. There are many pages listing radio broadcasts on different frequencies, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lists_of_radio_stations_by_frequency

Many of these, such as 88.0_FM are assessed as being Disambiguation pages - as logically they list articles of a 'similar' or 'connected' nature.

However are these truly disambiguation pages? As most of the time the individual articles have very different names (being the names of the radio services or their call-signs) so are these pages more correctly a 'list' page?

I recently assessed a few of these pages as 'disambiguation' - mainly following what seemed to be the current pattern. Another editor challenged this assessment. I can see both views having strong arguments to be adopted, so wish to get a wider view, as I think that there should be uniformity across the board here.

In your sublists there are a lot of ?? appearing. Are you going to be able to fill any of those dates in? Also we need to know where the information came from, ie references. Some clues may be in the ACMA2013 etc, but what does that mean? For your characteristics a table may be more compact. But where things have changed over time, perhaps you need multiple rows. Hi, I'm looking for some advice on how to handle the relaunch of Smooth Radio, a UK station about to undergo a dramatic change. Smooth came about as a result of the merging of several regional stations into a national station in October 2010, but its owners are now taking it off the national DAB multiplex and returning to some regional programming. As Smooth will effectively no longer be a national broadcaster, my proposal is to start a new article covering the new format station(s), and perhaps to move the existing article to another title. I was thinking of something like Smooth Radio (2010) for the existing station and Smooth Radio (2014) for the relaunched one. Smooth Radio would then become a disambiguation page, and is likely to be the main search term for anyone looking for Smooth stations, so we could direct them to the appropriate article. Smooth's previous incarnations all have separate articles, and the page on the present station is a GA, so I don't really want to see it ruined with the addition of lots of information that may not necessarily be sourceable. I've mentioned this on the talk page, but thought it might be worth asking here for input. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Paul MacDermott (talk) 19:45, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

American Radio History is a very good site. Among the more useful resources for those interested in old-time radio are directories/yearbooks and issues of publications such as Radio Mirror and Broadcasting magazines. It also has material related to other aspects of radio. Volumes can be browsed individually in PDF form. Addendum: The ARH site is far from static. Material is added frequently, sometimes more than once per week, expanding the resources available. I have heard of radio stations with a modern rock format that plays hard rock artists found on active rock stations like Metallica, Chevelle and Crossfade; artists found on alternative stations such as 311 and American Hi-Fi; and rock artists like O.A.R. and U2. Such stations like this do not play artists like Avicii or Lorde. What article would this fit in? My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

As I have looked at Wikipedia's "years in radio" pages, I have noticed that many -- probably all, although I haven't checked nearly that many -- have much room for expansion.

If you aren't familiar with those pages, Table of years in radio gives links to the individual pages. Typically each page has sections for events, debuts of programs and births of people associated with radio. Each section consists of a bulleted list, so little writing is required.

I have begun trying to remember to add to those pages when I come across a program debut, a person's birth or something like that. If each of us who is interested in radio would add to the appropriate pages when we find relevant information, that could mean significant expansion without much extra work by anyone.

Including references when we add items will enhance the usefulness of the lists. Eddie Blick (talk) 02:59, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

Just today I read a post higher on the page ("AfC submission")regarding a proposed article, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/List of old-time American radio announcers. The article interested me because at one point I submitted a proposed article along the same lines. The critique includes the comment, "if the list is going to include names without associated Wikipedia articles, references will be needed to confirm who they are and why they belong on the list."

My question for this group is, "What kind of reference would be sufficient?"

• Inclusion in an OTR reference such as John Dunning's "On the Air"?
• Listing in one of the old radio directories/annuals/yearbooks?
• Something else?

My feeling is that a list like this one should include announcers who do not have articles on Wikipedia so that researchers can easily identify names of people about whom they might want to write. Eddie Blick (talk) 20:08, 20 July 2014 (UTC)

I've compiled a list of radio stations in Liberia from a variety of sources: see List of radio stations in Liberia.

Radio seems to be the most important mass media in the country at the moment, particularly local radio, due to the high level of linguistic fragmentation in the country. Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. At page patrol, I merged DXAS to Far East Broadcasting Company since it looked like the thing to do per WP:BCAST.

I realized afterwards that there are plenty of stations of the same broadcaster with articles. While the current coverage is generally speaking a bit promotional, I wonder if there was a former consensus about what to do in those cases. Any thought from the Wikiproject?

The page for Let's Pretend appears to have been vandalized. It claims one incarnation of the show ran from January 2017 to March 2017 and another "began March 24, 1934, running for seventy decades before the final show on October 23, 1954." The sponsor is listed as Cream of Mushroom instead of Cream of Wheat. It claims there were episodes with names like "The Malice on Kinetics Class" and "The Placenta on the Closet." Someone who knows more about Golden Age radio should clean it up, stat. (3/4/2017)

I find that the radio/TV generators (transmitters) and their towers/masts are usually discussed in the same article. But I find the articles are variously categorized into Category:Radio masts and towers, Category:Communication towers and Category:Broadcast transmitters and their subcategories with neither rhyme nor reason and no explanation. In many articles about AM radio stations, there are one or more FM translators. The articles often state that these translators extend the station's coverage area. I read somewhere that this is not allowed for AM stations. Instead, translators merely give AM stations a presence on the FM dial in an era when many people are not using AM radio. Even if I don't know where this idea came from, perhaps the Wikipedia articles should not say the translators extend the coverage area, without any justification other than the fact (if this is a fact) that this particular station does not have a source for this information.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 20:19, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

It's been 6 years since I posted a request for someone to help with Irish pirate radio article but the silence has been deafening. The article has few sources or citations and these are rather minor for such an extensive article. It has mostly been edited by anonIPs but really needs an expert to review and add at least a few references, assuming one can find some books or other available sources as there seems to be little available online. The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Does WikiProject Radio (or Wikipedia in general) have a style rule for using only "XXX (radio series)" for disambiguation with articles about programs on radio? A number of titles have been changed to that form recently, causing me to wonder if I have overlooked a rule when I have created articles. I searched the WikiProject Radio talk archives and found Radio Article Names from May 2007 in which someone asked about variations in titles, but no response appeared. Improving consistency would be an improvement. My observation is that standards for these things emerge organically and some inconsistency through the process is not a disaster. The procedure would be to get at least one more editor to comment here on a concrete proposal and see if we can establish a WP:CONSENSUS around it. This might me helped by listing here the articles we would propose to move/rename. Kvng, LuckyLouie Compiling a list of all articles to which the proposal would apply would take some time. I have created more than 40 articles with "(radio program)" in the title, and many more with "(radio)" or "(radio program)" were created by other people. Most of the time the parenthetical element is used to differentiate from a TV program with the same title. Occasionally, it differentiates from a film or some other work with the same title. Probably the best single source would be List of U.S. radio programs, but we would have to use the source editor; the links are all piped to show the title without the parenthetical element. Is there a reason for listing dates in day-month-year format in "XXXX in radio" lists? Since most of the lists are dominated by American programs and events, it seems to me that the American month-day-year format would be appropriate. The format used to vary from one list to another (I suppose depending on which editor created each list) but recently some of those that were in American format have been changed (such as 1945 in radio). You'll want to get consensus before making any across-the-board changes. We can try to establish consensus here. If there is not enough participation you can use WP:RFC. To keep unproductive thrashing from happening, we generally try to stick with what is established unless there's a strong argument for change. "Dominated by American programs" does not appear to be a strong argument. Changes that clearly improve consistency, such as those you've identified, can usually be done without controversy. ~Kvng (talk) 14:43, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

To be clear though, I don't support making these date formatting changes without a consensus. This is the right place to try and get consensus but we need to have more than the two of us involved to get there. I don't have a strong opinion about whether the lists should be using MDY or DMY. This wikiproject has never, so far as I know, established a formal consensus one way or the other — because our domain of activity is international and thus encompasses countries using both standards, its position is much like the one used by Wikiproject Canada (where we have conflicting perceptions of the "standard", based on whether you appeal to government or media sources): as long as the article's date formatting is internally consistent within itself, it's not productive or useful to go around flipping it the other way. Also, the main reason "Year in radio" articles contain primarily American content isn't that they're meant to contain primarily American content, it's that other countries' radio stuff isn't getting added to them as reliably or comprehensively as it's supposed to be. So even those lists themselves are supposed to be crossing over the DMY-vs.-MDY line too — they're just incomplete, not intentionally exclusive to MDY countries. The page on PMR446 has had a link added to it that, in my opinion, violates the guidelines on external links, particularly point 11 in Wikipedia:FANSITE. I've also talked personally with a person who was partially responsbile for the edit, and they admitted to adding the site in hopes that it would bring traffic. While Wikipedia:FANSITE is very specific about such links, a number of radio articles appear to tolerate ELs to noncommercial "user groups" simply because there are so few published resources on the topics outside of amateurs, collectors and other enthusiasts. According to the Spanish Wiki article on Cordovez, es:Carlos Cordovez Borja he was operating a shortwave station in 1925, not FM. He seems like an interesting fellow and getting a translated version of his es.wiki article on en.wiki would be good. I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

Someone who understands these things might like to have a look at this: an unreliable editor altered "by suitable feeding of single antenna of an antenna group" to "by suitable feeding of a single antenna or an antenna group" in the lead, and I'm not confident enough of my German or Google translate to make sense of the German version. The same editor changed "metres" to "meters" throughout, when MOS:NUM says "m" should be used (which nicely avoids ENGVAR issues here): I've fixed those. The article has no refs, but an External Link which appears to source some at least of its content: Google translate offers:

"by a transmitter in Stolp (Pomerania). This transmitter has become interesting and unique because its antenna was a model test for a large project. Two questions should be clarified, namely whether a good fading reduction can be achieved with an extended surface antenna and the possibility of generating any desired directional diagram by changing the phase position of the individual radiators. The first question would have been important for long-wave broadcasters, the second question for a project that even today seems utopian. The so-called "construction project X" planned to arrange 10 active antennas, i.e. each equipped with a high-performance output stage, on the circumference of a circle with a diameter of around 1 km, in order to be able to generate any fade-free directional diagrams with central control through appropriate phases. That change is clearly wrong. One can't change the directional pattern of a single antenna by adjusting its phase. That only works in an array. The passage has further problems – it obfuscates the skywave suppression part of the trial (for which only a single central antenna is required) and the directional control aspect (for which a circular array of antennas is required). Also, the claim that the phase of only a single antenna is varied (the German source does not say that) is probably wrong. Much more likely all the elements were varied simultaneously. Right-now the en: article is about consumer/prosumer all-wave receivers. But there are also literally shortwave (nothing but shortwave) communications and military receivers. Right now, wikidata and commons lump them all in one commons:Category:Shortwave radio receivers and d:Q2558173. Shouldn't the two groups be split, at least for wikidata? The shortwave receiver article doesn't emphasize "consumer/prosumer all-wave receivers". It encompasses communications receivers like the R-390A and consumer receivers like the Trans-Oceanic because they are both examples of shortwave receivers. Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. I think what you’re saying is there are an unknown number of links to the FCC database that are published in articles that are dead or no longer working. Members of this project may be interested in a cleanup campaign proposing deletion of obscure radio station articles. I assume good faith on these proposals and don't have time to assess notability in every case. I want to make sure this revert was correct. I'm not convinced. If it was correct, of course, all radio articles should be consistent. There was a "discussion" here but User:BlueboyLINY would not discuss. Also, while it is unusual capitalization, the source capitalized every word in the headline.
