Wikipedia Loves Art! (February 27) The Smithsonian American Art Museum will be holding a Wikipedia Loves Art! meetup on Friday, February 27 from 5-7 pm in the Kogod Courtyard. This is a photography event involving Wikipedians, along with Flickr users and others, to generate content for Wikipedia. Come share your experiences, meet the other teams, and take some photos! The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

The text to which you refer talks about power generation for TWO generators that power the plant's operations, NOT the major (15?) generators. Not only is it a logical impossibility for those two generators to produce more power than the total output of the dam, they clearly produce only a tiny fraction of the total. I noticed you reverted both my edits to edit a composite which was of a much better quality if you ask me. Can you please select some images that you think should be used in the main Las Vegas article and hopefully another one can be made. Please find me six images then that you think will give a fair balance of the whole city to use in the main Las Vegas article and I'll try to replace it. I agree it was probably too geared towards the strip but isn't that where the big activity is at? We can't have a display of seven images and not have any of the strip either....P.S. nobody else reverted me only you on the strip article too. I'm confused. I thought both the MGM hotel, The Venetian and Caesars Palace were on the strip? Please tell me which two are not and I'll replace them with File:LasVegasSign06212005.jpg and File:Las Vegas Strip (view North from Tropicana intersection).jpg. By the looks of it I gather that Golden Nugget Las Vegas and Fremont Casino are not on the strip. If I replace those two with the two proposed above can we please add the composite to the Las Vegas Strip article? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ^ΨMonastery 20:21, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I know this now I just said! If I take out Fremont and Golden Nugget and replace with File:LasVegasSign06212005.jpg and File:Las Vegas Strip (view North from Tropicana intersection).jpg can we please readd the composite to the Las Vegas Strip article? I'm rather confused though as to the claim that Las Vegas Strip is not part of the city of Las Vegas. On a google map I do not see a seperate settlement but it looks like a part of the city. It might not me all the city has to offer but to me and most people it is still part of Las Vegas.. Can you explain to me why it is not? ‡ Himalayan ‡ ^ΨMonastery 21:04, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Apparently I was not clear about the basis for my revert of the deletion of that photo of the sign. The person who deleted it is involved in a discussion on the talk page regarding the scope of that article, and whether it should be explicitly expanded to include "the strip" area. Part of the argument favoring the large scope is that the existing article already is an expanded scope, and that photo, which has been there for a long time, is part of that evidence. I see your point, but I think we should keep in mind that we're talking specifically about a part of the article concerning the name of the product, and the origins of the name is a notable part of the article. Since the origins are unclear, I think theories are interesting and even notable. The theory I added about the link with lithium is particularly notable since early versions of 7 Up actually contained lithium. Also, the popularity of the Reddit article shows that this particular theory is "out there", i.e. people know about it. eug (talk) 12:12, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello Traveling Man. I wanted to follow up on your comments in reverting my changes on the Boston Marathon bombings article. I changed ...released a video to ...released video, summarizing that more than one video was released. Aside the fact that a preponderance of reliable sources stipulate that "photographs and video were released" without the singular modification, "a video", here is the FBI release itself: [1] Give your attention to the included quote, "Further, on FBI.gov, we have videos of the suspects. Yes, I agree. To be honest, I was mistaken in my belief that "video" was both singular and plural; like sheep for example. With such a preponderance of wp:rs reporting it as "a release of video", I wrongly felt its truth was on par with Paris and France. Nevertheless, the source I did include, which is the official press release, is abundantly clear in its prose that "videos" were part of the release. And I thank you for the kind manner in which you discharged your diligence, to maintain the critically important wp:verification that is so necessary for the article's integrity. Very nice work. Hello Travelling Man. I do agree that the picture I've put is concerning the Strip of Las Vegas and not the city area. But do you really think that the current picture is representative of the city of Las Vegas (moreover, it is written "downtown Las Vegas" over the picture) ? I don't think so. And I find that the current picture is quite badly-framed and the article deserves a better quality picture in my opinion. Sincerely

Weekend brunch goes on until as late as 3pm. I recently had Sunday brunch in Seattle[2] and Manhattan[3]. The lead doesn't differentiate between weekends and weekdays. Weekend brunches, esp. Sunday brunches, almost always go past noon. Dougweller (talk) 05:48, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

Found one:[4] "BRUNCH A late morning, noontime, or early afternoon meal, esp. on Sunday. MWCD: 1896. Source: BREAKFAST (MWCD: 15th cent ); LUNCH (MWCD: 1812). Brunch is a portmanteau word, a blend of the first two consonants of breakfast and all but the first consonant of lunch. The word developed after the name for the weekday noon meal changed from dinner to lunch and the "weight" of the meal changed from heavy to light. A light lunch was sufficient for a weekday (or Saturday) because it usu. followed a hearty breakfast; but it was redundant on a Sunday because it followed a hearty and also late breakfast. To the managers of hotels and restaurants, it made sense to combine breakfast and lunch into one meal, Sunday brunch, and either to serve only one other meal that day (a late Sunday dinner) or to serve no other meal at all. Brunch is now served between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 or 3:00 p.m., and it is usu. served buffet style, with visits necessary to several different "stations" for egg dishes, pancakes or waffles, quiches, meats, potatoes, salads, desserts, etc. This menu fits neither a breakfast nor a lunch, but it does fit the two together: a brunch. You stated you removed my photo because it is not a useful addition to this article. I find this to be false because this picture shows a waterfall in Havasu Creek that is not currently shown on this page, and this page is about the waterfalls in Havasu Creek. Have you personally been to Havasu Creek? Because if you have you would know cliff jumping in Havasu creek is VERY popular and is also not shown or talked about on this page. With this being said, I do not agree with your actions.

Cliff jumping may indeed be a popular (albeit proscribed) activity. If so, it belongs on a travel web site -- not in a Wikipedia article that is talking about Havasu Creek. Larry (talk) 04:25, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Thus the photo I added is contributing info that was not previously present. There just happens to be a cliff jumper in the photo that is not blocking the stated waterfall whatsoever.

Really? Both pictures focus on a cliff jumper, as even your captions admit. If one ignores the cliff jumper, one picture (the five part shot) would be ridiculous, and the other would be just another mediocre shot that doesn't distinguish itself from thousands of others. The connection you describe to AJ Hackett constitutes what Wikipedia considers a conflict of interest. Making changes to Hackett's article is strongly discouraged. Except for obvious corrections of fact, such as place of birth (which must still be supported by valid citation), it is recommended that you ask for changes to be made on the A.J. Hackett talk page. The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

The source specified in claiming that there were sister cities was Sister Cities International. If you check that reference, you'll see that Las Vegas is not part of the Sister Cities program. If I understand things correctly, it used to be, but no longer participates. Thus, Las Vegas has no sister cities. I've looked for other reliable sources that might show the existence of one or more sister cities, but can find no recent references. --Larry (talk) 22:11, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

That gets pretty tricky. Before I deleted the list of sister cities, I did a little googling, including the .gov site. I didn't find much, other than North Las Vegas (not exactly what we mean by sister city) and a reference to what sounded like a city, but wasn't. I also ran across a really, really old article (1999?) where some official complained about the cost of the program, but I didn't find anything else about it. In terms of listing past sister cities, we'd still need a reliable source, and I don't know how to find one of those. --Larry (talk) 23:27, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
